Paul Henry Giddens collection of Pennsylvania Oil Region photographs, 1847-1950.

Collection consists of photographic prints, negatives and stereoscopic views of the oil region in Pennsylvania during the later half of the nineteenth century. The items within the collection are copies of original prints, stereoscopic views, negatives, photos in books now out of print, photos in magazines and in newspapers. Images include maps of the region, oil farms and other drill sites, oil towns, refineries, drilling methods and equipment, and portraits of men and women in the industry, and date from 1847-1950. These photographic images were used to illustrate Paul H. Giddens' book Early Days of Oil, published by Princeton University Press in 1948. Many of the negatives in this collection were made from original prints and negatives taken by John A. Mather and presently housed in the Drake Museum, Titusville Pennsylvania. The dates of the original images range from 1860 to 1897.
